‘Kraven the Hunter’ Casts Oscar Nominee Ariana DeBose as Calypso
West Side Story star Ariana DeBose is the latest addition to the cast of Kraven the Hunter.
According to Deadline, the Oscar nominee will be playing Calypso in the movie, a “voodoo priestess who utilizes magic potions”, who in the comics is also “the occasional partner and lover of Kraven.” Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) also joined the cast recently as Chamaleon, Kraven’s brother.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is playing the titular character, with J. C. Chandor directing the movie, from a script by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk. The cast also includes Russell Crowe in a yet-unspecified role. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing. With casting deep underway, filming will most likely begin in the coming weeks.
This will be Sony’s third character to get its own movie in their own shared cinematic universe of Marvel characters. Tom Hardy’s Venom has already had two movies, the latest scoring the second-biggest opening weekend of 2021 and amassing $500M worldwide despite the pandemic. Jared Leto’s Morbius will finally be released next month, after being pushed back two years from its initial July 2020 release date. Venom: Let There Be Carnage already stretched the boundaries of the Marvel/Sony deal with a payoff in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but Morbius will apparently go even further, with Michael Keaton’s Vulture (somehow) appearing in the movie. That movie released its final trailer this week.
Ariana DeBose is one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now, as she is about to win her first Academy Award in a few weeks for her unforgettable performance in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. She just won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress and is by far the favorite in that category for the Oscars.
Kraven the Hunter will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023. Two more movies from Marvel/Sony are scheduled for next year, though we still don’t have titles for them. According to producer Amy Pascal, a third Venom movie is in pre-production, though there hasn’t been more on that since No Way Home was released.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
