‘Powerpuff Girls’ CW Reboot Gets First Look

Powerpuff

Sugar, spice, and everything nice… The Powerpuff Girls are back.

It wasn’t that long ago when The CW announced they would be rebooting (or sort of sequelizing) Cartoon Network’s legendary series The Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken. In the original show, three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers, named Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, fight criminals and supervillains in the fictional town of Townsville, where they live with their father and creator, a scientist named Professor Utonium. The premise of this surprising live-action reboot is answering a simple question: what happens when these girls grow up?

Agents of SHIELD actresses Chloe Bennet and Dove Cameron are playing Blossom and Bubbles respectively, with newcomer Yara Perrault, who is better known for her work on Broadway, acting as Buttercup. Scrubs alum Donald Faison is playing Doctor Utonium, and Nicholas Podany (Summertime Dropouts) is set to play Mojo Jojo’s son (his father was the original show’s main villain). Furthermore, Robyn Lively is taking over Sara Bellum, plus Tom Kenny will once again narrate the superheroines’ adventures.

Yesterday we got our first official look at the titular girls, who are now in their twenties:

As expected, The CW is going for a “young adult” reimagining that looks very much CW-ish. However, I think the premise is actually interesting (at least on paper) and offers more opportunities than a simple live-action remake of the original series.

If you’re thinking about the original uniforms, The CW says we’ll see them, but only in flashbacks to their teenage years, before the girls gave up crime-fighting. For now, you can check out these leaked set pictures and even a video that shows Blossom taking flight.
