‘The Suicide Squad’: James Gunn Takes DC Franchise In A Bold New Direction
Following a social media scuffle that temporarily got him removed from Guardians of the Galaxy while working at Marvel Studios, James Gunn took some time off to work for their Distinguished Competition to revitalize the Suicide Squad IP after a critically-maligned first installment. The results speak for themselves, as the reimagining of the anti-hero team has tons of deep cuts to DC lore.
The cast of The Suicide Squad, whose characters have been revealed on the stream, includes Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joaquín Cosío (Major General Suarez), David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), Steve Agee (the on-set actor for King Shark, but not the voice), Idris Elba (Bloodsport), Storm Reid (Tyra, Bloodsport’s daughter), John Cena (Peacemaker), Nathan Fillion (TDK), Peter Capaldi (The Thinker), Pete Davidson (Blackguard), Flula Borg (Javelin), Michael Rooker (Savant), Mayling Ng (Mongal), Alice Braga (Solsoria), Sean Gunn (Weasel), Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt), and Juan Diego Botto (General Luna, also known as Presidente). Cast members confirmed to appear that have not had their roles revealed include Taika Waititi, Tinashe Kajese, and Julio Ruiz. You can catch the cast reveal below:

After the big cast reveal, the bulk of the cast united to hold an impromptu quiz show. Plot details on The Suicide Squad were scarce, but James Gunn described it as the biggest movie that he’s ever filmed (at least until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), and it appears that the film is set in an unnamed South American nation… Also, Bloodsport is on the team because he got a prison sentence for shooting Superman with a kryptonite bullet. In addition, James Gunn unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, featuring several completed shots from the movie itself. Check it out below:
