‘The Meg’: Warner Bros. Has Greenlit a Sequel

The megaladon in The Meg
It seems The Meg is getting a sequel, after an unexpectedly great run in the box office.

The monster film, starring Jason Statham, made over $500M in theaters. That was clearly enough for Warner Bros. to decide it deserved a sequel. While we don’t officially know what it will be called or what it will be about, or even if Statham will be returning, it’s probably safe to assume that it will involve him trying to take down a bigger (and therefore more dangerous) Megaladon.

Fans have been speculating for a while on whether or not The Meg would get a sequel, and now the film’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura provided an update on where the sequel was at. Here’s what he said:

“We’re working on a script. Yeah. So you never know until you get a good script… I was very thankful that the audience got that we were just trying to have fun, (and) not take ourselves seriously at all.”

Di Bonaventura was likely referring to the movie’s poor critical reception, rating at a mere 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans went to see it in droves however, and they will be heartened by his claim that they’re waiting for a good script before moving forward with the production.

The temptation with a monster movie is often to rush a sequel out the door quickly in order to cash in on its popularity, but at least the writing team is willing to treat the property with respect. Hopefully the sequel will be worthy of the original’s huge box office haul.

The Meg starred Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson and Ruby Rose. It was directed by Jon Turteltaub and written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. For more information on the The Meg‘s sequel, stay tuned to Movie News Net.
