2018’s ‘Halloween’ Affected ‘Baby Driver’ Joke

Halloween
One of the more memorable gags in Baby Driver revolves around a misunderstanding about buying Halloween masks for an armed robbery and somehow ending up with a bunch of goons wearing Austin Powers-themed masks while committing their big heist. But originally, the joke was going to play out a little bit differently than it did in the film.

If you haven’t seen Baby Driver, you can catch the joke as it plays out in the film right here:

News has come up suggesting that there had to be a few changes due to the Halloween movie that was being developed by Blumhouse Productions, which was in early development at the time. In the scripted version of the scene, instead of JD buying everyone Mike Myers (circa Austin Powers) masks, everyone was going to bring their own Michael Myers mask… But hilarity would ensue when it turns out that he misinterpreted the instructions and brought an Austin Powers mask, in stark contrast to everyone else wearing the guise of the Halloween killer. But this didn’t happen due to Universal not being willing to lease the likeness of the mask for the crime-filled action-comedy.

Greg Nicotero, one of the people who worked on Baby Driver costume design and props, shared an image of what the mask would have looked like in the movie had they got permission. The design is a faithful recreation of Michael Myers’s appearance, which is a modified William Shatner mask:

Having this as an office ornament is pretty freaking cool, especially considering that Mr. Nicotero’s most well-known work is seen on another popular horror series: AMC’s The Walking Dead. It’s a bit of a shame we never got to see it hit the big screen, but at least we know that we’re going to get another Halloween movie that seems to have lived up to the hype.

Baby Driver is available to watch on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital formats. Halloween will be released on October 19, 2018.
