Box Office Weekend – ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Sees Dollar Signs

Box Office
In a case of an unsurprising case of there being a surprise box office hit of the Summer, Crazy Rich Asians has managed to score a solid opening after the Warner Bros. project got a significant amount of pre-release buzz. However, fellow new releases Mile 22 and Alpha weren’t so lucky.

Crazy Rich Asians has taken home $34M after five days of play. That’s already more than the global gross for The Joy Luck Club ($32.9M) back in 1993, which was the last major studio movie to feature a predominantly-Asian cast. PostTrak data suggests that turnout from Asian audiences was exceptionally high at 38% of the total moviegoers, just behind Caucasian demographics at 41%. However, new releases like STX’s Mile 22 and Sony’s Alpha weren’t so lucky, with $13M+ and $10M+ totals respectively against respective production budgets of $35M and $51M. Not a great look for the critically-panned Mark Wahlberg franchise-hopeful or the critically-acclaimed ice age movie.

There’s also more good news to be had for Warner Brothers with Jason Statham’s giant shark movie The Meg, which held over well on its second weekend and nearly matched the three-day box office for Crazy Rich Asians. Internationally, that movie has crossed the $300M mark this weekend, which has seen a lot of milestones passed with Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout crossing $500M, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation crossing $400M, and Universal’s Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! crossing $300M. Speaking of Universal, it’s looking like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will end its global box office run below or just past $1.3B, a good hold for a sequel of its size.
