Sony Lands Writer for Kraven the Hunter Movie

Kraven the Hunter gets a writer

Sony are moving ahead with their Kraven the Hunter movie, hiring a new writer.

According to Collider, Richard Wenk (Equalizer 2) will write the script about the Spider-Man villain.

It was reported a year ago that Sony were looking to develop multiple films to create their own Spider-Man universe, with their Silver Sable and Black Cat team up movie Silver & Black set to follow Tom Hardy’s Venom.

It was also mentioned then that Sony were also investigating potential films based on the Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio characters. While we’ve since heard that Jared Leto will star in a Morbius film, this is the first confirmation we’ve got that Kraven the Hunter will be moving forward.

Of course, Kraven the Hunter is a big game hunter who is almost defined by his obsession with Spider-Man, so it will be interesting to see how Wenk deals with Spidey’s absence from the film, as this film will almost certainly not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, it will be part of the same universe as the Venom film so perhaps Eddie Brock could be the focus of Kraven’s ambitions, rather than Peter Parker. Though the temptation would surely be to make that the subject of a Venom 2, so Sony will likely to have to find some other dangerous prey for Kraven to hunt.

Collider does say that the likelihood of this film being made depends on the success of Venom, so the fate of the two characters are already intertwined.

While Sony claim that this universe will exist without Spider-Man, there’s no doubt that they’re sewing the seeds for a Spider-Man universe. If all these films are a success, Sony have a much stronger leg to stand on when Spider-Man’s MCU contract expires.

When the deal was first negotiated, Sony’s existing franchise was experiencing a severe case of diminishing returns. If Venom, Silver & Black, Morbius and Kraven the Hunter do well, then they can say no to Marvel, knowing full well that they have a world full of established villains to face off against Peter Parker.

It’s likely that the only reason we haven’t heard more about the Mysterio movie is because that character is already slated to show up in Spider-Man: Far From Home, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

A lot depends on how Venom film shakes up. For more updates on Kraven the Hunter and the other Sony spin-off movies, stay tuned to MNN.
