Updated with Video from the Panel! Everything We Know About Predator After SDCC

Director Shane Black and the main cast showed up to discuss the upcoming Predator film, in a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Black turned up with Sterling K Brown, Keegan Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane and Augusta Aguilera. The group had plenty to say about the new film.

Predator has an R rating

One of the most tantalising reveals at the panel was that Predator is R rated. That sounds appropriate for a Predator movie, but the coolest part of this reveal is how it got that rating.

Shane Black showed off a clip of a Predator fighting the new Mega-Predator. The fight was won when the Predator we know and love got its head ripped off by the giant Mega-Predator, and supposedly no gory detail was spared. ‘Well, we got ourselves an R rating, so that helped…’ Black joked. ‘And that shot isn’t finished. There’s more blood coming.’

The action scenes were inspired by John Wick

We can expect the gun-play in Predator to be thrilling and stylish, if Olivia Munn is anything to go by. The actress, who plays Casey Bracket in the film, said that the cast watched a lot of John Wick to prepare to fight the Predators.

With a director like Shane Black at the helm, hopefully we’ll see some truly inventive action scenes.

Olivia Munn’s character is a badass

While not one of the military characters, Olivia Munn felt it important that her character emulate action heroes of the past.

‘Whenever you see movies, a guy can pick up a gun and know how to do it. I didn’t want her to be proficient because she’s not a soldier, but I wanted her to know because guys know how,’ Munn explained. ‘I learned how to one-arm chamber that. Anytime there was an opportunity for my character to have a weapon, I’d grab it.’

How Predator is inspired by the original

Shane Black wanted to make sure his film hearkened back to the original, and one of the ways he did that was by looking at the film’s ensemble cast:

‘They’re all these misfits that come together. They’re good at what they do, but it’s important that they’ve forgotten that. It’s the modern equivalent to the group from the first movie.’

Guerrilla Predators

Shane Black shed some light on just how the Predators fight in the new film, and they seemed to employ guerrilla tactics. ‘They’re fast, they’re deadly, they’re lithe,’ he explained. ‘They strike and retreat. These guys move like the wind. They come, they cut you and leave and you’re cut when they’re done.’

Will we see Xenomorphs?

The Alien and Predator franchises have been intertwined for years now, thanks to the Alien vs Predator films.

Asked whether or not we’ll see a xenomorph in Predator, Shane Black dampened expectations with the admission that there are no Alien references in the movie. However, he did leave one final tease: ‘I don’t think Alien vs Predator is dead. Do you?’

That’s everything we learned about Predator from the SDCC panel, thanks to coverage from Ethan Alter of Yahoo and Fandango. For further updates on Predator ahead of its September 14 release, stay tuned to MNN.
