Could We Be Getting an Alien Series Soon?

A curious rumour has been circulating recently that the Alien franchise might be heading to the small screen sometime soon.

Omegaunderground claim that reliable sources revealed to them recently that 20th Century Fox were considering greenlighting a series within the Alien universe.

The only thing stopping them from giving it the all clear was that they couldn’t decide where to air it. Netflix and Hulu had already been ruled out as streaming options, and they were undecided whether to give it to another streaming platform or air it on FX.

But with Alien Day having just gone, Omegaunderground speculate that perhaps the aim is to announce this new series on the next Alien Day, which would be the 40th anniversary of the original film. Any planned series would still only be in the very early planning stages, but in a year’s time there would be enough material to tease to fans.

While I imagine any such plans would be put on hold once Fox get bought out by Disney, who love money and would almost definitely be keen to reboot the franchise on the big screen, it’s not an outlandish idea.

Prometheus was divisive to say the least, while Alien: Covenant got slaughtered by fans and critics alike last year. I could see how Fox might be keen to try out other avenues in order to get the franchise right, using the popularity of a new series to spawn new films with new hype behind them.

It’s not as if a series would have to be particularly expensive, either. The CW’s arrowverse has proven a lot can be done with CGI monsters on a limited budget, and perhaps a limited series that really leaned into the horror aspect of the franchise really could strike a chord with fans.

And when you consider the shows Fox currently air on FX that are based on their existing film franchises (Legion comes from the X-Men universe, Fargo is an adaption of the original Cohen Brothers movie), then it does seem possible.

Would you like to see an Alien series, or would you prefer they have another go at rebooting the franchise? Or maybe you just wish they left the property alone? Let us know in the comments.
