‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Posters Show New Titans

Godzilla Atomic Breath 2014
Godzilla: King of the Monsters has received four new posters, highlighting each of the four major Titans that will walk the planet once more in a battle for supremacy that will decide the fate of the Earth – and determine the survival or extinctions of the humans who live on it.

The new posters focus on Godzilla himself, alongside the multi-headed dragon King Ghidorah, the bug queen Mothra, and the flaming pteranodon Rodan. Godzilla and Mothra are being portrayed as defenders of the planet, while King Ghidorah is unambiguously the biggest threat in the film, and Rodan is a wild card in contrast to his usual portrayal as a heroic figure. Director Michael Dougherty revealed all four posters through his Twitter page:

Playing off of the religious imagery described in this tweet, subsequent tweets made by the director describe apocalyptic scripture that resembles passages from The Book of Revelation, but are original quotes in actuality.

Dougherty also released a humorous Christmas-themed variant of the Godzilla poster, which can be seen below:

While the tone of some of these tweets are cheeky in nature, Dougherty seems to be taking the franchise as seriously as possible. While many Godzilla movies are commonly thought of as campy fun to the uninitiated, several Godzilla movies are particularly bleak in tone and portray the monsters victims as much as the people that are left dead or displaced in their wake. The overall tone of the American take on this franchise is one that’s comparatively lighter, but it seems as though it’s being looked at through a similar lens as the original films, even if it’s a creature feature at the end of the day.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released on May 31, 2019.
