‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Trailer Wishes the Teenage Witch a Demonic Happy Birthday

Chilling Tales Of Sabrina
The first poster and trailer for Chilling Tales of Sabrina have dropped, and in spite of what that “Sixteen Candles with a horror twist”-looking poster would indicate, this series looks incredibly dark.

Here’s the poster below in full:

Looks kind of like a “John Hughes with a dash of Joe Dante” sort of romp, right? Well, get ready to have your socks blown off, because this trailer presents this series as the Archie Comics equivalent of American Horror Story:

Zoinks! Gotta say, the visuals on this are looking stunning in the right places and horrifying in others. Sure, this series is based on a comic by the same name focusing on a darker, more horror-focused version of the character’s mythology, but it’s difficult to recognize that we’re dealing with an adaptation of the same source material that gave us the ABC/The WB sitcom and an animated spin-off series that most people think of when they hear the character’s name. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I’m more interested in seeing where this show will take us in a few weeks than I was when it was first announced.

Netflix also released a synopsis of the television series with the trailer, explaining that the sixteen candles homage is actually a plot point:

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells the story of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a half-witch half-mortal teenage girl. She’s been waiting her whole life for her 16th birthday, but something wicked this way comes, forcing her to choose between the path of light and the path of night.”

While this show is handled by the same people producing The CW’s Riverdale, it doesn’t quite look like it will be set in that continuity. However, given that Riverdale gets a lot of attention through Netflix, The CW could likely find a way to arrange a crossover.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 will arrive on Netflix on October 26.
