‘It’ Prequel Series Stalking HBO Max

It: Chapter 2

It will be back… This time, on HBO Max.

In surprising-but-not-really news, reports are coming in saying an It prequel series is in the early stages of development at HBO Max, with Andy and Barbara Muschietti, as well as Jason Fuchs, back as executive producers. The Transom (through The Ankler) dropped the exclusive, and then Variety confirmed the rumblings with their own sources, who also claim the Muschiettis and Fuchs developed the story for the show, with Fuchs serving as scribe too. Andy will direct the first episode if the series moves forward. A writers’ room is now open, and Warner Bros. Television is, as expected, the studio behind the project.

So far, the only details floating around are a tentative title, Welcome to Derry, and the promise of a 1960s setting, which pretty much confirms the series would largely deal with the previous cycle of violence in Derry — the two-parter 2017/19 film adaptation starts in 1988 (three decades later than the novel), so Pennywise’s 27-year slumber would indeed send us back to the early 60s if we were to explore what happened last time It awakened. On top of that, the story is also said to deal with the origin story of both It and Derry, an exploration that takes up a fair amount of space in Stephen King’s best-seller book.

The latest It films collectively grossed over $1.1 billion at the global box office. The novel was previously adapted into a two-part miniseries for ABC back in 1990, featuring Tim Curry’s iconic performance as Pennywise. This potential new series marks yet another bite at WB’s long list of properties which could provide crowd-pleasing content for HBO Max.
