On May 5, the streamer will release the first three episodes, following up with a weekly episode after that. The finale will air on June 9. Here is the official synopsis of the show:

Based on a true story, The Staircase explores the life of Michael Peterson (Colin Firth), his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette).

In real life, Peterson was convicted of murder in 2003, but was then freed in 2017 after he submitted an Alford plea. A docuseries also titled The Staircase was aired in 2005 on the Sundance Channel, and is currently available to watch on Netflix. French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade shot additional footage for the streamer back in 2012 and 2013.

Created by Antonio Campos, The Staircase is co-produced by Annapurna Television. It’s been written and executive produced by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, who also serve as showrunners. Campos directed six episodes, with Leigh Janiak (Fear Street trilogy) directing the other two.
