‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Drops First Poster, Trailer April 9

Warner Bros. is getting ready to kick off the marketing campaign for one of their biggest movies this year. With Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong now annihilating the box office, and Furiosa set for a Cannes premiere right before its worldwide debut in late May, Joker: Folie à Deux is next on WB’s TO DO list.

The studio has announced that the first trailer for the Todd Phillips-directed sequel will be coming out next Tuesday, April 9. But to give audiences a little taste before that, they have premiered the first official poster, featuring Joaquin Phoenix back as Joker, and a new look at Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Check it out in full here:

The movie is scheduled for October 4, five years after the previous installment opened and grossed $1 billion at the box office worldwide. The sequel is a lot more ambitious, both creatively and financially. On the one hand, it will be a jukebox musical, featuring reinterpretations of 15 “very well-known songs”, as reported by Variety. That doesn’t close the door on an original song being featured, though, and with Lady Gaga co-starring in the pic, it seems safe to assume she’ll be working in the music department too.

On the money side, the budget has inflated in the transition. This is one of the first movies that current WB heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy greenlit back when they took over in 2022, and though it may seem like a safe bet to give it a bigger budget given the success of the previous one, it’s scaled up exponentially, going from $60M to $200M+. That includes nice $20M and $10M checks for Phoenix and Lady Gaga, and it’s probably safe to assume that Phillips is getting a similar cut.

The first Joker also brought in several Oscar nominations, as well as wins for Phoenix as Best Actor and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir for Best Score.
