‘Superman: Legacy’ Retitled ‘Superman’; Filming Begins as New Costume is Teased

Superman
Writer-director James Gunn’s Superman will be ditching the subtitle, as the new film will no longer be called Superman: Legacy. The director unveiled the very first tease at the new costume, focused on the House of El insignia, as a celebration of the wrap on the first day of filming.

Hell, Norway has frozen over as production on a new standalone(-ish) Superman movie has finally begun after over a decade since the last one. It has been heavily speculated that Hell will be doubling as the location of the Fortress of Solitude, which is Superman’s home away from home in the Arctic. To commemorate the end of the first day, James Gunn has shared a look at the new logo, which he also noted dropped on Superman’s unofficial birthday of Leap Day, and revealed the new, simpler title:

The new logo seems to be most clearly influenced by the more alien “S” design seen in the Elseworlds comic Kingdom Come, but with the traditional Superman colors seen on the logo design that began circulation ahead of 1978’s Superman: The Movie. There’s also a bit of influence from the Fleischer cartoons, as the outline of the insignia is yellow instead of the traditional red. There’s also clear texturing on the outfit, similar to the approach taken with the costume that Henry Cavill wore in the DCEU. Other details on the costume are scant for the time being, but it appears that one of his co-stars has indicated that the character’s famous trunks will be making a return for the first time in a live-action film since 2006:

Superman kickstarts a new shared universe (simply referred to as the DCU) following the anticlimactic petering out of the DCEU at the box office. The film will skip the origin story and instead take place a few years into the Man of Steel’s career as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing and present life as a reporter for the Daily Planet, and finding his way as a superhero in a world that is already filled with them. The cast of Superman includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Kal-El / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabella Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore as Otis. It has been confirmed that Milly Alcock will be portraying Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers / Supergirl, and indicated that Sean Gunn may be playing Mawell Lord, but it is not clear if either will be in Superman.

Other films in development for the DCU include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold (a Batman and Robin film), and Swamp Thing, along with the shows Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Booster Gold, Paradise Lost (a Wonder Woman prequel), a new season of Peacemaker (which is next on the docket for James Gunn after the movie wraps filming), and an untitled Arkham Asylum series from producer Matt Reeves. Reeves will continue developing content for his standalone Batman universe, including The Penguin (which drops later this year) and The Batman Part II, and Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux will kick off the non-canon Elseworlds label (which Reeves’s Batman projects will fall under, though they do not share a continuity with Joker) with some musical madness later this year.

Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
