‘Superman: Legacy’ Starts Filming This Week

Superman Legacy

More coming from Friday’s earnings call for Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q4. CEO David Zaslav confirmed that the highly ambitious Superman: Legacy, which will launch a new era for the DC franchise stewarded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, will begin filming this week.

The announcement was made shortly after Gunn posted a picture on Instagram of the main cast following the film’s table read in Atlanta. The actors have been hard at work training for a few months, and after rushing pre-production following the strikes, Gunn will finally start shooting this week. He wrote the script prior to the May 2, 2023, WGA strike.

Zaslav, when sharing the news, was realistic about the underperformance that the WB studio has been showing for the past couple of years, but remained optimistic about its future. Via Variety, he said:

“Bottom line, the studio has really been underperforming — including at the end of the year where we had some real struggle — but we’re very optimistic about this year, and it has given us the chance to have a lot of upside in the next two years.

On the film side, obviously this is going to continue to be a hit-driven business. Just last year was a great example, with the greatest success in the film studio’s history, and some real challenges across the industry on the on the superhero side.”

Zaslav is talking about Barbie at the end there, but obviously, that didn’t come for free. Though the studio’s Wonka performed better than expected in December, other Christmas-related titles like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and most notably, The Color Purple, lost millions of dollars.

Superman: Legacy will be the first of a long string of DC projects. Also in the works, and kicking off the nascent DCU, is the seven-episode animated series Creature Commandos. A live-action Waller series for Max is also in development. Other movies like The Authority and The Brave and the Bold are coming, with the studio hoping to find a director for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow before the end of the year, now that they’ve found their star in Milly Alcock.
