Tom Cruise in Talks to Star in Iñárritu’s Next Movie for Legendary, Warner Bros.

Tom Cruise to team up with Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Tom Cruise has found its first project under his new “strategic partnership” with Warner Bros, Deadline reports. The actor is in negotiations with Legendary and WB to star in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s next pic, which the Mexican filmmaker co-wrote in 2023 and is planning to direct and produce this year.

Details are scarce at this point, as the package has been marked with a “top secret” label, but we do know that the film will mark a reunion between Iñárritu and his Birdman co-writers Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone; Sabina Berman will also receive co-writing credit. Should Cruise’s deal close, he will also produce the film, along with Legendary.

The story is an original one, and Iñárritu, who said after the release of his last movie, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, that he might not direct another film. The creative juices started to flow last year again, and after getting the script to a good place, he started meeting with top-tier actors to star in his first Hollywood studio film since The Revenant. Tom Cruise was one of the first — the Mission: Impossible actor apparently moved on quickly to get into the room with Iñárritu once he got word he was casting up the secret movie. The two shook hands as soon as the meeting was over.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, filming will probably begin soon after Cruise has wrapped production on Mission: Impossible 8. This is the latest sign that Cruise is looking at establishing himself as an actor who wants to work with more artistic filmmakers and not dedicate himself exclusively to action franchises. He’s as big a film fan as they come, and over the past couple of months, there have already been rumblings about him possibly landing a role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic. His deal with WB is another step in that direction, though Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy also want tentpole films from him down the road.
