‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off Focused on Aegon’s Conquest Taps Mattson Tomlin To Write

Game of Thrones

HBO is moving forward with more Game of Thrones spin-off ahead of the season 2 debut of House of the Dragon. First reported last year, the network is developing a live-action telling of the story behind Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they may have found their lead writer.

Mattson Tomlin, who is already in the Warner Bros. Discovery home after doing uncredited work on The Batman and being brought back as a co-writer for The Batman Part II, is the network’s choice to lead the project, which is still in the very early stages of development. When the idea first leaked to the press, it was still something they were kicking around; now, apparently, it’s taking some shape at HBO — as evidenced by the hiring of Tomlin.

THR is describing the series as a direct prequel to House of the Dragon. The story would be focused on Aegon I Targaryen, who, along with his two sister-wives, conquered six of the seven kingdoms (except Dorne) and was the first to sit on the Iron Throne. Those events took place 300 years prior to Daenerys Targaryen and have been heavily referenced across the main series and its spin-off, House of the Dragon.

The news also comes out a few days after concept art and on-set footage featuring Naomi Watts on the scrapped pilot for what would have been the first Game of Thrones spin-off, Blood Moon, was posted on social media. HBO canceled the project and went ahead with House of the Dragon, a story that George R. R. Martin was much more passionate about. The network is supposed to start production this year on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.

It’s been nearly two years since it was reported that a sequel series to Game of Thrones starring Kit Harington as Jon Snow and we still don’t know anything about it, which sort of leads us to believe that is not happening anymore.

House of the Dragon season 2 comes out this summer.
