‘Minecraft’ Movie Adds Kate McKinnon, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jemaine Clement
Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie, which is currently shooting in New Zealand, is assembling a rather interesting cast. It was reported earlier this week that Jennifer Coolidge would be joining the ensemble, hot off her second Emmy win for The White Lotus. Now, Deadline is adding two more names: Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement.
McKinnon had a great 2023 with a key role in the biggest film of the year, Barbie, and Clement is best known for Flight of the Conchords and his role as Dr. Ian Garvin in the Avatar movies. Legendary and Domain are splitting financing duties for the video game adaptation, which hails from director Jared Hess. Screenwriter credits are still being worked out. Warners will distribute it worldwide.
In a new interview with Eurogamer, Hess spoke about the need to avoid the Sonic the Hedgehog situation, referring to the 2019 backlash to the look of CG Sonic that caused the studio to retool the VFX and push the movie a few months. He said:
“I think anybody that does any IP, they just want to avoid an ‘Ugly Sonic’ situation. I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us,”
The cast of the Minecraft movie so far includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement.
The pic will be released in US theaters on April 4, 2025.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
