‘Madame Web’ First Trailer Introduces Dakota Johnson in Sony’s New Marvel Film

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for SJ Clarkson’s Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson as the mysterious Marvel Comics character. The film is the latest in Sony’s interconnected universe of Spider-Man-adjacent characters, although it’s unclear if this movie is actually in the same continuity as the Venom movies, judging from the synopsis.

The official synopsis reads:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

The cast includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott. SJ Clarkson directed the feature and also co-wrote the script with Claire Parker from a story by Kerem Sanga. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produces while Adam Merims and Claire Parker are executive producers.

For those keeping track, there were some rumors a while ago about this film being some sort of time travel movie à la Terminator, but the trailer definitely does not suggest that. Those rumors might actually be spoiler-filled if Sony is keeping big plot twists under lock and key, so we’ll refrain from sharing more.

Madame Web opens in theaters on February 14, 2024. It currently sits as one of three Spider-Man-universe films Sony is planning on releasing next year. Kraven the Hunter was delayed a few months ago from October 2023 into August 30, 2024, possibly because they needed to reshoot some stuff they couldn’t get around to because of the strike. Additionally, Venom 3 was just delayed from June to November 2024. That project was in the middle of filming when the SAG-AFTRA strike was called and should be one of the first to resume soon.
