‘The Crow’ Reboot Acquired for North American Distribution By Lionsgate in Eight-Figure TIFF Deal

Hot news from TIFF via Deadline: Lionsgate has acquired the upcoming reboot of The Crow for North American distribution, months after filming wrapped. No release date has been announced yet, but it is expected to be a 2024 title.

Rupert Sanders directed the pic from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Will Schneider. The cast includes Bill Skarsgård in the lead role of Eric Draven, along with singer-songwriter FKA twigs, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. Producers include Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, the late Samuel Hadida, and the late Edward R. Pressman. The film’s production companies include Davis Films, Hassell Free Productions, Electric Shadow Company, and Pressman Film.

The reboot of The Crow has been a cursed project for many years, with multiple iterations of actors and creative teams attached at different points. The stars finally aligned last year after Skarsgård joined the project in the lead role and Sanders was able to start production.

The movie has been seeking a distributor ever since. Lionsgate acquired it this week at the Toronto International Film Festival in an eight-figure deal that CAA Media Finance brokered and that closed on Wednesday night. FilmNation is distributing internationally, with multiple markets already signed. Charlotte Koh, Executive VP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions at Lionsgate, said in a statement:

“We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology. To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”

Sanders’ film is a new adaptation of James O’Barr’s original graphic novel, first published in 1989, which follows the revenge quest of a man who was brutally murdered but came back to life to avenge himself and his fiancé. It was already adapted into a motion picture in 1994, led by Brandon Lee, who tragically passed away during an on-set accident.
