‘The Killer’: First Trailer and Poster Revealed for David Fincher’s Next Film

The Killer

After revealing the first poster for The Killer on Monday morning, Netflix has now released our first good look at the new film from director David Fincher, which stars Michael Fassbender as a former assassin who sets off on a revenge path.

The film will make its worldwide debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 3, before opening in select theaters in October and finally dropping on Netflix on November 10. It is the latest from David Fincher’s overall deal with Netflix which has not only produced 2020’s Mank, but also House of Cards and Mindhunter. After exploring the history of Hollywood with Mank, Fincher goes back to his roots of exploring the nature of violence, which he did best with Seven or Mindhunter, but also with Gone Girl and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

The Killer is an adaptation of Alexis Nolent and Luc Jacamon’s graphic novel series, and was written by Andrew Kevin Walker. The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton.

While this would normally not play as an awards movie, there is a lot of positive buzz around it, and with Netflix struggling to have a big contender this season (Todd Haynes’May December is the closest thing they have right now; they were hoping Bradley Cooper’s Maestro would be it but that has been having poor buzz for a few months), they might push The Killer as a big player in an Oscar season that has already been impacted by the removal of Dune: Part Two from the fall schedule and could see further delays. Moreover, Fincher’s deal with Netflix might very well include an awards push for whatever movies he makes for them; debuting this at Venice is no coincidence, too.

Michael Fassbender could also use some help as he tries to gain back some trust from the audience and the Academy. This and Next Goal Wins are his first movies out since 2019’s Dark Phoenix, which came out after The Snowman, Alien: Covenant, Song to Song, and Assassin’s Creed. If this movie plays as well as we expect it to, he should definitely be prepping some fruit baskets to send over to Fincher’s house.
