‘The Flash’ Sequel Would Bring Back Ezra Miller, Says Andy Muschietti

The Flash Sequel

DC’s upcoming The Flash has been the source of no shortage of controversies, most (if not all) of them related to its lead actor’s off-screen behavior and troubles with the law. And while it seemed like a done deal that Ezra Miller would be stepping out of the role after the movie comes out, director Andy Muschietti is apparently saying “not so fast!”, adding that a The Flash sequel could involve the actor.

Speaking in a yet-to-be-released episode of the podcast The Discourse (via The Playlist), Muschietti was asked if Miller would be back as Barry Allen in a hypothetical sequel to The Flash, to which her responded:

“If [a sequel] happens, yes. I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”

Producer Barbara Muschietti also weighed in to add the following:

“In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional [actor]. Ezra gave everything for this role – physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.”

Miller’s shenanigans, which include burglary charges (for which they pleaded guilty) and accusations of grooming underage kids, just to scratch the surface have been a PR headache for the studio and everyone involved with the film. As a result, it seems like the marketing department decided to focus their campaign for the film on building internal hype (remember how Tom Cruise said “This is the movie we need right now” about The Flash a few months ago, or how David Zaslav and James Gunn have labeled is as one of the best superhero movies ever?) and releasing several trailers and TV spots to try to build anticipation towards Michael Keaton’s return as Batman. But unlike what usually happens with a movie this big, the studio is trying to keep the number of interviews from its cast and crew to a minimum.

Despite reports that a script for a sequel to The Flash is already written, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios and rebooting the entire thing, it’s a foregone conclusion that the cast from the current continuity will not be carried over. They just can’t say that yet, because they have three movies to promote. All they have to say right now about the Flash sequel is that, if it happened, everything would proceed as normal. But it ultimately won’t matter, because it will not happen.

The Flash speeds into theaters on June 16. Andy Muschietti directs from a script by Christina Hodson. In addition to Miller, Sasha Calle stars as Supergirl, Michael Keaton as Batman (from Tim Burton’s movies), Ben Affleck as Batman (from Zack Snyder’s movies), Michael Shannon as Zod, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, and Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen.
