‘Killers of the Flower Moon’: First Trailer Revealed for Martin Scorsese’s Latest, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, and Lily Gladstone

Killers of the Flower Moon

Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon, coming soon to Apple TV+.

Two days before the film finally screens to the public at the Cannes Film Festival, Apple TV Plus and Paramount Pictures have revealed the official trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which pairs for the first time the Goodfellas director with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the same film.

The story, loosely based on the 2017 novel Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, by David Grann, is focused on the series of murders that took place in Osage Country, Oklahoma, in the early 1920s, after the Native Americans that inhabited the land found an immense amount of oil beneath their soil and quickly became the richest per capita people in the world. Lily Gladstone plays Mollie, Ernest’s loving wife who finds herself seeing her family members get killed one by one; DiCaprio plays Ernest, who will soon become the central suspect of the investigation, which is led by Jesse Plemons’ Tom White. De Niro plays Ernest’s uncle, who may have a personal interest in his nephew’s wife’s fortune.

The film, which wrapped in the fall of 2021, has been in post-production for a long time (as usual with a Martin Scorsese film), but will now finally be seen by the most prestigious film festival in the world. Apparently, Thierry Fremaux, director of the festival, invited Scorsese to screen the film in competition, but the director wouldn’t budge. No specific reason was given, but an in-depth article by The Hollywood Reporter on this issue gave a few possible solutions — the most likely scenario is that Scorsese had a lot more to lose if he Killers of the Flower Moon didn’t win the Palm d’Or than to win if it did.

The trade has also been told from insiders that this may be a strategy on the distributors’ side, where they realized that films like Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis screened out of competition in the South of France last year and later went on to make a ton of money at the box office and were also considered for awards later. So there is precedent for a big-budget film playing but not competing in Cannes and later being well received by the public and the Academy.

Killers of the Flower Moon will open on October 6 before it moves on to stream exclusively on Apple TV Plus.
