Mia Goth Joins ‘Blade’ Cast as Filming Start Approaches

Mia Goth Blade

The cast of Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot is shaping up, and according to Deadline, one of Hollywood’s most promising rising actresses, Mia Goth, has been added to the project.

Goth jumped into stardom with last year’s back-to-back horror films X and Pearl, and is returning for the threequel MaXXXine, which just started shooting this week. She also appeared in the off-beat Infinity Pool, which had a positive reception at the Sundance Film Festival before opening in theaters in late January (the audience was not as enthusiastic about the film, as it only made $5M worldwide).

Not a lot is known about the character she’ll be playing or the overall plot of the movie. Twitter user MyTimeToShineHello, who is known for having some insider Marvel knowledge, posted after news broke that she may be playing Lilith, though that remains pretty vague at this point. If true, it’s unclear which of two different iterations of the Lilith character is in the script — it could either be Dracula’s daughter or a demon sorceress known as “Mother of All Demons” (recently featured in the Midnight Suns video game). There was a lot of talk about Dracula being in Blade last year, with fans positioning Anthony Starr as an ideal pick for the role.

That was never a thing, apparently, but it doesn’t mean it can’t still be. Starr was shooting The Boys season 4 up until recently, and the schedules would have coincided with the original plans for Blade. However, the original version of Blade, which was at one point targeting a November 2023 release date, was scrapped last fall just a few weeks before shooting, when Mahershala Ali and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige decided it wasn’t in the right shape.

A new director, Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country), and a new writer, Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), were brought on board. They have been reworking the script ever since, and it seems like it may finally be in the right place to start shooting within the next couple of months. The fact the casting process is back on is a good sign, though a lot remains in question — how many people from the original ensemble will be carried over to the new version of the script? From reports, we assume this was a page-one rewrite, so probably lots are gone, including the biggest name besides Ali himself, Delroy Lindo, who was to have a key role.

If everything continues to go down the right path, the film could start shooting before summer and be able to hit its fall 2024 release date. As of today, Marvel Studios has dated it for September 6, 2024, but with Deadpool 3 holding a more Halloween-oriented November 8, 2024, release date, we wouldn’t be surprised if those two projects where shuffled around (Deadpool 3 would likely be moved into the February 2025 slot, and Blade‘s September date would be reserved for another Disney film). This is pure speculation.

The next film from Marvel Studios to be hitting cinemas is James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Additionally, this week, Disney also kicked off the marketing campaign for Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, coming out this November. Check out the first teaser trailer here:
