Quentin Tarantino is getting ready to direct his next project, titled The Movie Critic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood writer-director has completed a script that could start making the rounds through the studios as soon as this week. Details are sparse, but it is said to be centered around a female character in 1970s Hollywood; the trade speculates this could be legendary movie critic Pauline Kael, or at least a character inspired by her, who passed away in 2001, and whom Tarantino is deeply respectful of. She was a force to be reckoned with, and spent some time working as a consultant for Paramount Pictures around the time the script is set in.

Quentin Tarantino has been insisting for a long time that he has ten films in him, and with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he made his ninth. Now, The Hollywood Reporter states that The Movie Critic is the name of the script for a feature film, but reporter Jeff Sneider had a very good point on Twitter, recalling a story by Variety last year about Tarantino confirming he would be shooting an eight-episode miniseries in 2023. The filmmaker had also said before that he was interested in adapting Bounty Law, the fictional TV series starring Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, into a miniseries. If the eight-episode miniseries he talked about last year is indeed Bounty Law, then we can probably set The Movie Critic as a feature film (which, given the title, also makes sense).

The Movie Critic is reportedly looking for a studio home now (Sony emerges as a likely contender) and eyeing a fall shoot, possibly aiming at a 2024 release. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, Tarantino is known for attracting the biggest movie stars to work for him. And if this is indeed his tenth and final film, knowing it could be their last chance to work with one of the most iconic filmmakers of the past 30 years could be enough to create the biggest line-up of A-listers ever. Actors are also known for accepting lower salaries than usual to work with filmmakers they are passionate about. The question now becomes: how long do we have to wait to confirm that Samuel L. Jackson will be in the film?

Tarantino has won two Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, and though he’s been nominated three times for Best Director, he’s never won. As he looks to wrap his filmography, he’s definitely aiming higher than Best Original Screenplay this time around.

Stay tuned for more, as we expect the next few months to be busy in terms of casting reports for this movie!
