‘The Penguin’ Starts Shooting, Adds Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni
The upcoming HBO Max spin-off series from The Batman, set around Colin Farrell’s The Penguin, started shooting this week, production designer Kalina Ivanov announced on social media.
Besides Farrell, the cast includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, and, according to Deadline, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, who will have a recurring role in the series. News of the series casting the part of Maroni was broken by The Illuminerdi back in November, though they couldn’t secure Brown’s name. Interestingly enough, this happened on the one-year anniversary of The Batman‘s release.
Specific plot details are being kept under wraps, but the eight-episode series is speculated to be dealing with the aftermath of the events of The Batman, which left an opening for the lead mob boss of Gotham City, with multiple families and candidates rising up to the challenge. According to reports from The Illuminerdi, we are likely to get deep into Oswald Cobblepot’s life, as the series was looking at casting the character’s mother, which would be a recurring role as well.
Matt Reeves, who directed The Batman and is also executive producing The Penguin, said recently that the series would be bridging the gap between The Batman and its upcoming sequel. Farrell’s role in the sequel is yet to be announced, but senior Hollywood reporter Jeff Sneider said in a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast that Robert Pattinson is likely to cameo in the series, either as Bruce Wayne and/or The Batman. The Batman 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release in October of 2025. Scripting is currently underway, and pre-production could begin as soon as this year.
The Penguin will likely arrive on HBO Max in 2024. Lauren LeFranc is showrunner, head writer, and executive producer, along with Reeves, Dylan Clark, Colin Farrell, Craig Zobel, and Bill Carraro. Zobel will be directing the first three episodes.
