‘Barbie’ First Trailer Brings Life in Plastic to the Screen
Greta Gerwig’s long-anticipated Barbie live-action incarnation, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is just seven months away. After releasing two official looks at their characters earlier this year, Warner Bros. has finally unveiled the first trailer for the film.

The trailer first played in theaters in front of showings of Avatar: The Way of Water on Thursday night, and word quickly spread around social media about an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey at the beginning. Well, they weren’t kidding. The first part of the trailer, before the logo, basically compresses the first 30 minutes of the iconic Stanley Kubrick film to deliver quite a unique teaser that lets audiences know they are not ready for this movie, and includes Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra. It ended with a wink to arguably the most famous edit in movie history, when the doll thrown in the air moves into the next phase, a Barbie. In the second half, we get a quick look at some of the musical numbers that will be featured in the movie, as well as our first look at Barbieland (see the YouTube thumbnail).
The teaser poster for the film has also been revealed:
A live-action Barbie movie has been years in the making, with different actresses and creative talent involved. The project started to gain momentum after Robbie & Gerwig joined, and finally, in 2021, Gosling’s casting set off a long stream of highly-coveted Hollywood actors joining the pic.
Greta Gerwig directs a script co-written by her and her husband Noah Baumbach. The cast includes Margot Robbie, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Ncuti Gatwa, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou. Robbie is also a producer on the project via her banner LuckyChap, as well as Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and Paddington producer David Heyman.
Barbie is set for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023, the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
