‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Is No “Palate Cleanser”; Producer Teases Kang’s Formidable Presence

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

We are now just two months away from the release of the next theatrical film from Marvel Studios, and with Avatar: The Way of Water now making its debut in theaters, Disney is about to open the floodgates of marketing for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Speaking to Total Film Magazine, producer Stephen Broussard explained that this time they wanted a different feel than a “palate cleanser” for an Ant-Man film:

“Coming after the Avengers movies, phrases like ‘palate cleanser’ had been thrown around about the Ant-Man movies. [We felt] if we’re getting a chance at part three, we want the film to be big and feel central to the future of the MCU.”

Quantumania will be exploring the Quantum Realm in a much deeper way than the MCU has done before. Broussard said the following about the new secret universe:

“It feels like a place you haven’t been to before in the MCU, full of people and characters and worlds and politics and history.”

Jonathan Majors as Kang

The film will also introduce the next big baddie of the MCU, Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. Majors already made his MCU debut in the season 1 finale of Loki, where he played the Kang variant He Who Remains. However, Kang is coming into the MCU to stay — and he will even appear in the title in the next Avengers film:

“He is very powerful, very formidable, very strong, and will have, obviously, an ongoing presence, à la Thanos in the stories, going forward in ways that are different from Thanos and feel very fresh to us.”

Majors himself explained in a recent interview with Canadian television channel CinePop how his character compares to Josh Brolin’s Thanos:

“I mean, what do you want me to say? (laughs) Listen, I think Thanos was an incredible big bad and we’re only in this phase because he did such a great job. Josh Brolin did a great job at portraying him. I try [not to make] comparisons between Kang and Thanos. But it’s a whole different world. I will say that’s a whole different world. My assignment is different. And the character of Kang is different. So it will be different. And as far as the fear, and intimidation factor, and the powerful factor… we’ll let the movie show.”

A new trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could debut within the next few weeks, ahead of its February 17, 2023, release. Peyton Reed is back in the director’s chair, with Jeff Loveness at the keyboard (he will also be scripting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty). Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are joined once again by Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas. Kathryn Newton takes on the role of Cassie Lang, who will probably become Stature in the new movie, plus Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, as mentioned above. Corey Stoll, Randall Park, and Bill Murray round up the cast.
