‘The Last of Us’ Readies for January Premiere With New Trailer
A little over a month before HBO’s The Last of Us series arrives, its main trailer is here to show off what Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have been cooking for the last couple of years.

Fans of the hit PlayStation video game will recognize many characters, locations, and events from the 2013 classic in this trailer, but there’s also plenty of new material being teased here, so it appears that players are in for some surprises too. And the cherry on top might be that final looks at the clickers alongside a massive bloater that looks even scarier in live-action.
The series will mark the fourth time fans have experienced the same story, as the 2013 game was followed in 2014 by a remaster for PS4, and a full-on remake was released in September this year exclusively on PS5. If things work out well enough for the show, HBO and PlayStation Productions will no doubt push to adapt the sequel, which hit in 2020 and found massive success too.
The platform plans to release The Last of Us on January 15, after it wrapped production early this summer. If things go according to plan, it will be eligible for next year’s Emmy Awards. The cast includes Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal, Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge (reprising her role from the game), Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Jeffrey Pierce, and Anna Torv. Original TLOU stars Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and Troy Baker (Joel) have cameos in the series.
Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and creative director and writer of the original game, is also the co-creator, executive producer, writer, and (partial) director of The Last of Us, along with Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam are executive producers. Kantemir Balágov, Jasmila Zbanic, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb, and Liza Johnson are credited as directors as well.
The Last of Us marks PlayStation Productions’ second major live-action adaptation after the Uncharted (also from Naughty Dog) film dug up enough gold earlier this year in theaters. The Sony-run production company is quickly mining its vast library of classic and modern video games in order to craft both TV series and theatrical films that (attempt to) honor some of gaming’s biggest icons and most famous stories. Their projects that currently seem closer to completion and release are Peacock’s Twisted Metal series — coming next year — and Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo biographical adaptation, which has promptly assembled an enticing cast and is currently shooting.
