‘Wind River’ Sequel in the Works From Kari Skogland
Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River is getting a sequel titled Wind River: The Next Chapter, even though few people are carrying over from the first film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kari Skogland, of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier fame, has been tapped to direct the new film, which will begin production in January 2023. For now, the only returning cast member is Martin Sensmeier as Chip Hanson. Patrick Massett and John Zinman wrote the script, which is based on the following synopsis, according to THR:
“In ‘Wind River: The Next Chapter’, terror escalates on the Wind River reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved. The FBI enlists Hanson, a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante and the Reservation he calls home.”
The first film starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, and was released in 2017. Taylor Sheridan wrote and directed the pic, the first time he took on both duties. It’s unknown if he was consulted for the sequel. The first movie grossed $44 million worldwide on an $11 million budget, and was critically acclaimed, scoring a 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Skogland was also hired to direct an upcoming Cleopatra remake/reimagining starring Gal Gadot last year, after Patty Jenkins exited the project to focus on Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros. No further development has been reported on that movie, and Gadot has since shot multiple films. It seems like, if that is still happening, it’s at least 2-3 more years away from release.
No release date has been set for Wind River: The Next Chapter, but stay tuned for more news as production nears.
