Rumor: Marvel Studios Planning Silver Surfer Special Presentation for Disney Plus

Marvel Studios Silver Surfer

After the release of Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night on Disney Plus earlier this month, Marvel Studios might be setting their plans in motion for their next “Special Presentations”.

After initially reporting on Marvel’s Nova project for Disney Plus being turned into a Special Presentation too, The Cosmic Circus has learned that the studio is planning on a Silver Surfer Special Presentation, that would reportedly feature Norrin Radd as Galactus’ Herald out in the far corners of the cosmos, without ever being connected to Earth or the MCU at large. According to the story, Marvel would be targeting a release date on Disney Plus prior to the theatrical debut of Fantastic Four, currently scheduled for February 14, 2025.

It’s unknown what will be the connective thread between the two if any. It’s possible Marvel Studios is looking at introducing the character of Silver Surfer in a solo outing at first and then having him be part of the movie, or maybe they would use it as a vehicle to set the stage for the events of the movie. However, for now, we are taking this as a rumor, until it’s confirmed by more reputable trades or the studio itself.

The character of Silver Surfer was last seen in live-action in 2007’s Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where he was played by Doug Jones. In the 90s, James Gunn wrote an extensive treatment for a solo movie for Fox centered around the character, though that never saw any development. With a few cosmic-related projects coming up in the next year, and later Nova, it’s possible the character will make a grand entrance into the MCU before his hypothetical Special Presentation on Disney Plus. However, if Marvel is following the Werewolf by Night formula, this is not to be expected.

The “Special Presentation” format will continue later this year with the release of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which could announce a release date very soon. The next Marvel film in the pipeline is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, out in theaters on November 11. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will follow up on February 17, 2023.
