‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Aiming for 2024 Release, Will Feature a Two-Episode Battle

The Rings of Power - Durin and Elrond

The Amazon machine is not stopping. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay said over the summer they would begin production on season 2 of The Rings of Power in October, and they have lived up to that promise.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Monday the new season is now filming in the UK after making the move from New Zealand, where they filmed all of season 1. But now, as part of the cover story for The Hollywood Reporter Magazine, which was published today, the showrunners have given us a few additional details for the new season.

According to McKay, they will be working on the new season for another couple of years, hinting at a release sometime in late summer/early fall 2024. This makes a lot of sense, as it will probably involve between 8 and 10 months of filming (season 1 took 18 months to shoot, with interruptions due to COVID) and at least a year of post-production.

The writer of the story also had the chance to visit the headquarters where the team is planning out the new season, and to check out concept art for some of the most impressive sequences it will feature. According to the story, “[the showrunners] plan to introduce more iconic locations, familiar Middle-earth characters, and a massive two-episode battle.” While we still don’t know which iconic locations they are referring to, we do know from a story by TIME Magazine this summer that season 2 will introduce Círdan the Shipwright, one of the oldest and wisest elves. No actor has reportedly been cast yet.

The Rings of Power is the most expensive series of all time and a massive gamble for Amazon Studios — so much so that if it failed, it could literally destroy the studio (though not the parent company), as insiders told The Hollywood Reporter. The bill climbed up to around $700 million for season 1, including the acquisition of the rights. Season 2 and onward will be much cheaper in comparison, since the initial expenses to set up the project were huge.

The Rings of Power has two episodes left to air from season 1. You can check out our review of the latest two episodes here. Look forward to our thoughts on the next two after episode 8 airs on Friday, October 14.
