‘Community: The Movie’ Officially a Go at Peacock

Community

Six seasons and a movie. That was the fan campaign ignited after a season 2 episode and that Community fans have pointed back to over the years, with creator Dan Harmon promising for a long time it would happen.

That promise is now about to be fulfilled, as Peacock has ordered Community: The Movie after winning over the rights in a competitive bidding war. Dan Harmon is back as co-writer, along with Andrew Guest, though no directors have been announced. Six of the main nine actors from the series will be returning: Joel McHale (Jeff), Danny Pudi (Abed), Alison Brie (Annie), Gillian Jacobs (Britta), Jim Rash (Craig), and Ken Jeong (Ben). Donald Glover (Troy), Chevy Chase (Pierce), and Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley) all exited the series before the finale and are not currently attached.

Chase exited after season four due to on-set clashes with Harmon, while Brown left during season five to take care of her father. The first five seasons aired on NBC, starting in 2009, with the last season moving to Yahoo! Screen during the portal’s short-lived experiment on streaming television. Harmon most recently said that the movie was more a matter of “when” and not “if”, and it seems like he was right. No production start date has been provided, but shooting could begin either later this year or in early 2023 for a late 2023/early 2024 release.

Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement:

“‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from Community’s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious, and cool NBC comedy. We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony, and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences.”

Sony co-president Jason Clodfelter added:

“Community was light years ahead of its time when it premiered on NBC in 2009 and we are thrilled to once again visit the brilliant minds of Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, and this impeccable cast. We are grateful to Peacock, our partners at UTV and to all the zealous fans who have cherished this iconic show.”
