Namor Confirmed To Be a Mutant in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’
As part of their new cover story, Empire Magazine had the chance to sit down with members of the cast and crew of the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, including Namor himself, Tenoch Huerta.
Speaking to the magazine, Huerta confirmed that one of the elements from the Marvel comics that will be carried over to the screen is that Namor is indeed a mutant. The mutant species is slightly beginning to appear in the MCU, and it all started earlier this year with the reveal that Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, is one of them. Unless She-Hulk reveals yet another one in the next few episodes, Namor will be the second confirmed mutant in the MCU.
In the comics, Namor is the ruler of Atlantis — in the movie, his kingdom will be named Talocan. He is forced to expose himself and his kingdom after T’Challa decided to reveal Wakanda’s true power to the world at the end-credits sequence of Black Panther, as Huerta explained:
“That decision puts Talocan in jeopardy. And Talocan has to take action to protect themselves.”
Writer/director Ryan Coogler describes Namor as a dream antagonist for his movie, saying:
“The contrast between T’Challa and Namor – their characters, and their nations – just leaps off the page. He’s a dream antagonist.”
According to Marvel boss and executive producer of the film, Kevin Feige, Coogler already wanted to tease a clash between Wakanda and Talocan/Atlantis at the end of the first movie:
“Ryan had a pitch for a tag at the end of ‘Black Panther’. The camera would push through the palace in Wakanda, and then we’d see wet footprints leading up to the throne.”
