New ‘Avatar’ Trailer Announces Its Re-Release in Theaters on September 23

Disney and 20th Century Studios have released a flashy trailer to announce that Avatar will be re-released in theaters in the US and overseas on September 23, in remastered 4K High Dynamic Range.

First announced at CinemaCon, the re-release will serve as a welcome back to Pandora before the global rollout of its long-in-the-making sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water in December. Check out the new trailer here:

With D23 coming up in two weeks and 20th Century Studios co-hosting a panel with Marvel and Lucasfilm on Saturday, September 10, audiences should expect the full trailer for The Way of Water to premiere there. It would probably drop online right after and be ready to play in theaters in front of the re-release of Avatar.

Disney Plus has been the source of a lot of criticism over the past week after they pulled the original Avatar from the platform worldwide and without warning. This calculated move was most likely made to get butts in seats on September 23 and widen the gap between Avatar and Avengers: Endgame at the all-time worldwide box office. On that day, the movie will not face a lot of competition besides the highly-anticipated, Awards-hopeful Don’t Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde. September is pretty much a desert land in terms of high-profile projects, and Avatar could greatly benefit from that.

Released in December 2009, Avatar opened to $77 million in the US, but word of mouth slowly started to get around, and by the end of its first run, the movie made almost $750 million in the States. Internationally, however, James Cameron’s highly ambitious project blew up and eventually surpassed Titanic to earn the #1 movie of all time, making $2.74 billion worldwide, a figure that seemed untouchable until Avengers: Endgame was released ten years later. In 2010, a special edition of the movie was released, making $44.8 million more at the worldwide box office. Endgame barely managed to beat Avatar‘s record of $2.78 billion, after Disney re-released it in a bunch of theaters before the end of its run with some bonus (but unfinished) content after the credits. It now sits at $2.797 billion worldwide. But when Disney re-released Avatar in China in 2021, James Cameron’s movie earned $57 million more at the box office, passing Endgame and reclaiming its #1 all-time spot. Sitting now at $2.847 billion, the movie has the potential to become the first one to cross the $3 billion barrier.
