‘Birds of Prey’ Director Cathy Yan Sets ‘Paprika’ Series Adaptation as Next Project

Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan to adapt Paprika

Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey) has been signed to executive produce and direct a live-action series adaptation of the Yasutaka Tsutsui novel Paprika.

This is according to Deadline, as they have learned that Amazon Studios will be backing and releasing the project. Yan’s producing partner, Ash Sarohia, is also executive producing via their Rewild banner, plus Masi Oka and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown.

No acting talent has been attached to Paprika yet. The 1993 novel — famously adapted into an anime film in 2006 by Satoshi Kon — is described as a character-driven, science-fiction story with “a mind-bending narrative centering around a technology that allows us to invade people’s dreams.” No production start date has been provided either.

Yan, mostly known for her directorial efforts in Birds of Prey and Dead Pigs, is now getting ready to direct her next feature film, The Freshening. She is also up for an Emmy for directing the Succession season 3 episode The Disruption. In an interview with Deadline earlier this year, she expressed her enthusiasm for joining the series this past season after being a big fan:

“It was really helpful that I was such a fan of the show. I felt like I really cared about these characters and I knew you they were. I was just eager to see what was happening. Reading the script for the first time and also seeing the table read, which was over Zoom because of Covid, was such a thrill. Just being part of the show was a thrill. I’ve been such a longtime fan and was obsessed with the world. Getting to do it felt like such an honor, and it was a bonus to shoot in New York City, my home.”

The Emmy Awards will be given out on September 11.
