Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie to Star in ‘Ocean’s’ Prequel

Ryan Gosling Margot Robbie

Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie could reunite in a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven set in Europe in the 1960s.

First reported by Puck and later confirmed to multiple major trades, including The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling is currently in negotiations to star in the pic. Margot Robbie joined earlier this year, and will also be a producer on the film via her LuckyChap banner. Jay Roach (Bombshell) is on board to direct, with Carrie Solomon penning the script. The project is being fast-tracked at Warner, which could green light it soon for a spring 2023 shoot.

Robbie and Gosling will next be seen together in Barbie, the highly anticipated movie from Greta Gerwig that made all the headlines earlier this year when pictures from the set started to come out. It is currently in post-production, targeting a July 21, 2023, release. Gerwig co-wrote the script with her husband, Noah Baumbach. Warner Bros. is also behind that film.

The Ocean’s franchise was involuntarily kicked off by the 1960 movie of the same name, starring Frank Sinatra. Four decades later, Steven Soderbergh would inject new life into it with his 2001 (sort of) remake of that film, which included a long list of some of the most iconic movie stars of the time, from Brad Pitt or George Clooney to Julia Roberts or Matt Damon. The movie would go on to gross $450 million worldwide, and set up two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve in 2004, which would gross $360 million worldwide, and Ocean’s Thirteen, which made $311 million worldwide in 2007. Eleven years later, in 2018, Warner Bros. would release Ocean’s Eight, a female spin-off starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and more, that would make $297 million worldwide. With that title, the studio was clearly hoping for another trilogy, though no other film has been made since with that cast.

With this move, WB is clearly still invested in the franchise, and is looking at profiting off of the Barbie momentum by signing Ryan Gosling for another film with Margot Robbie. A summer 2024 release is more than likely.
