‘Dune: Part Two’ — Filming Already Underway

Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced that cameras are rolling on Dune: Part Two, the sequel to the 2021 critical and financial hit, that was also nominated for ten Academy Awards.

If local reports are to be believed, Dune: Part Two has already been filming in Italy for about a week. The production schedule has been moved ahead a few months, as it was originally going to start during the fall in Budapest. With WB announcing that cameras are rolling, it’s very unlikely that last week’s Italy shoot was some early work before they get ready for full-scale production later this year.

The studio has also confirmed that the movie will see the return of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. In addition, they have confirmed the reports that said the movie will also feature Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as the Emperor of the Known Universe, Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub. While they didn’t confirm who these last three will be playing, reports say they will portray Princess Irulan, Lady Margot, and Shishakli respectively.

Here’s the official synopsis of Dune: Part Two:

“This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Villeneuve is directing Dune: Part Two from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Herbert’s novel. The film is being produced by Denis Villeneuve, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Tanya Lapointe and Patrick McCormick. The executive producers are Josh Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Kim Herbert, Thomas Tull, Jon Spaihts, Richard P. Rubinstein and John Harrison, with Kevin J. Anderson serving as creative consultant.

Once again, Villeneuve is collaborating with Oscar-winning director of photography Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, The Batman), three-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West (The Revenant), and Oscar-nominated makeup, hair and prosthetic designer Donald Mowat (Blade Runner 2049). Multiple Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is again on hand to create the score. Villeneuve is also reteaming with Oscar-winning production designer Patrice Vermette (Arrival, Sicario), Oscar-winning editor Joe Walker (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival), three-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (First Man, Blade Runner 2049), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (Blade Runner 2049).

Dune: Part Two is being filmed on location in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy. The film is slated for a November 17, 2023, worldwide release from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment.
