‘Succession’ Season 4 and ‘The Last of Us’ Will Be Released in the First Half of 2023
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, HBO boss Casey Bloys commented on the success of the network at the Emmys, and teased what’s ahead for them.
HBO/HBO Max earned 140 nominations across 24 shows, including Succession, which lead the charts with 25 noms, The White Lotus, with 20, Hacks, 17, and Euphoria, 16. Zendaya also broke a few records for this last show, as she became the youngest person with an Emmy producing nomination. When asked when we could expect new seasons from these series, Bloys replied:
“We haven’t announced dates yet but I’d imagine ‘White Lotus’, ‘Succession’, ‘Barry’ and ‘Hacks’ would all be within next year’s Emmy eligibility window.”
The eligibility period for next year has been set to episodes debuting before May 31, 2023. This means that for Succession or The White Lotus to be eligible for the 75th edition of the Emmys, they will have to air all of their episodes by that day. This is certainly a tall order for Succession season 4, as they just started shooting all ten, hour-long episodes of their new season, so Jesse Armstrong and the team might have to rush through post-production to get it done in time.
Bloys then added that whether or not a fifth season of Succession gets made will depend solely on what the showrunners want to do:
“For a decision like that we do defer to showrunners. It’s up to Jesse Armstrong to decide. They’ve started shooting the fourth season and broken stories and he wants to go through that process to see if he does have more story or themes to explore. It’s up to him. If he wants to do more, great. If this is all he’s got, great.”
He went on to confirm that there are no plans in place for a Succession spin-off series. He also wouldn’t comment on the development of the reported Jon Snow-centered sequel series to Game of Thrones.
And last but not least, when asked about when we could be getting The Last of Us on our screens, Bloys said:
“It’s closer to early 2023.”
The series wrapped filming this past June in Canada after eleven months of interrupted filming. Depending on how much post-production they were able to do this past year while filming, we could get it as soon as late 2022, or possibly in January-February of 2023, based on Bloys’ comment.
