‘Once Upon a Deadpool’ Trailer Relishes in PG-13 Shenanigans

Deadpool
Fox aren’t just aware that they’re shamelessly recutting Deadpool 2 to get the raunchy superhero movie to play to a wider audience, they’re embracing it in a brand-new trailer for the PG-13 version of the film, featuring Fred Savage as the character he portrayed in 1987’s The Princess Bride. (Or himself. It’s not 100% clear.)

As previously explainedDeadpool 2 is getting a PG-13 cut in order to open in markets where the film did not get a release in (*cough* China *cough*) and to stick it to cancer by raising money for the F*** Cancer charity. The movie is in theaters for a limited engagement from December 12 to December 24, and every single ticket sold will be matched with a $1 donation to F*** Cancer. (Deadpool, fittingly, is a cancer survivor himself, and he gained a healing factor that nullifies his disease, but unfortunately it also made his cancer cells immortal, so he looks like he’s got a full-body rash under his mask even if he doesn’t suffer any other cancer symptoms.)

Once Upon a Deadpool justifies having a sanitized version of the unapologetically R-rated superhero movie by having Deadpool himself commit an act of breaking-and-entering, followed by kind-of kidnapping Fred Savage. Deadpool, a fan of Savage’s appearance in a different 20th Century Fox movie released 31 years ago, decides to re-enact The Princess Bride and make the former child star listen to a different kind of, erm, “fairy tale”. Savage, meanwhile, gets to offer a (wait for it) savage jab at the expense of Fox’s own Marvel movies. The frame story of Deadpool talking with Savage seems like a pretty convenient way for them to get around the decidedly R-rated content that Deadpool 2 had, such as the scene where Juggernaut rips our “hero” in half. Anyway, you can watch the trailer below:

It looks like this movie is a classic case of what appears to be a bad idea on paper ends up being something special when actually realized, so we’re hopeful that this retelling of last Summer’s breakout R-rated hit is able to spin its narrative in a splendid fashion.

Once Upon a Deadpool will be released on December 12, 2018.
