Two of the ‘Avatar’ Sequels Wrap Filming; Titles for the Four Movies Possibly Revealed

Avatar
Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that principal photography on two of the four Avatar sequels have wrapped as filming on the other two continue. Meanwhile, the titles for the four movies may have been revealed.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sigourney Weaver talked about Neill Blomkamp’s Aliens project, which was slated to ignore the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection in favor of continuing the story of Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop decades after the events of Aliens. She noted that the project ultimately isn’t going to happen anytime soon due to his commitments with other projects that have come up since then, touching upon her involvement with one of James Cameron’s other sci-fi franchises:

“We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”

When pressed for details on the CGI-heavy saga about the aliens of Pandora, Weaver explained that the second and third films have finished shooting and that the fourth and fifth films are now being filmed:

“We just finished shooting two and three… It’s kind of one story. They’re all independent. It works without four and five, but it really is a big saga.”

Weaver also acknowledges that the first movie did more to establish the world and setting than the characters, and that’s something that changes starting with Avatar 2:

“The scripts are amazing, and in the first one, which I love, I think he hadn’t set up a lot of things. In this one he got to tell this very personal story. They’re amazing. There’s a message to not sacrifice everything for greed and conquest. It will take all four movies to really make that message loud and clear for the whole world.”

In addition, BBC reports that they’ve come across documents revealing that the titles for the four sequels will be Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. Since these movies are years from being released, none of these titles should be seen as official right now.

The four Avatar sequels are currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024, and December 19, 2025.
