‘Watchmen’: HBO Offers First Look at Superhero Series
HBO have unveiled a first look at their new Watchmen series from Damon Lindelof, and the image of a new character seems to indicate a return of costumed heroes in a world that has outlawed their presence.
The official account for the series has promoted what appears to be a new hero: a police officer in a yellow mask. (Perhaps this character may serve as a spiritual successor to Rorschach?) It can be seen below:
Details on Watchmen are scarce, but the series serves as a sequel to the events of the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and is set predominantly in Tulsa, Oklahoma in what appears to be the modern day instead of New York City, circa 1985. While the movie version is largely faithful to the source material, there are a few key differences (mostly involving the means by which the climax of the story happens, as the movie has a much more grounded and wide-reaching version of what draws the story to a close), and there’s reason to suspect that more ties to the comic book version of the story will appear over the film version. Lindelof has hinted that we’ll see and hear characters from the original story appear somehow, as it seems like his story is going to take an in-depth look at this world and its history.
The official synopsis for the series is as follows:
“Set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
Watchmen will air on HBO at some point in 2019. The show’s cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon.
