Maria Sten Joins DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’

Swamp Thing
Deadline confirmed another new addition to the DC Universe on Friday; Maria Sten will co-star as Swamp Thing‘s Liz Tremayne.

The news came just a day after it was announced that Gotham‘s Crystal Reed would star as Abby Arcane.

Sten, who has previously starred in Channel Zero and Straight Outta Compton, will play a childhood friend of Abby’s. According to Deadline, Sten’s Tremayne “splits her time between reporting for the local paper and bartending at her aging father’s roadhouse bar. Her no-nonsense attitude belies a deep compassion for her friends and family as she sets out in her uncompromising quest to expose the secrets that threaten her beloved hometown.”

In related news, Swamp Thing‘s executive producer Gary Dauberman confirmed to Slash Film that “we set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible.”

He also confirmed that the series will be an origin story “told [primarily] through the point of view of Abby Arcane.” And that Alan Moore’s fan favorite run on the comic has been a major inspiration for the show, saying “fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary. We really wanted to live up to that standard that Moore set up back in the ’80s.

As for the possibility of a crossover with Titans? “I think the opportunity is there” Dauberman said, “but it’s not mandated. I think we could if, in the future, it organically works itself out that way.” He did go on to add that no discussions have taken place, so it’s extremely unlikely there will be any crossover during the first season.

Dauberman went on to tease that Swamp Thing himself will have a pretty impressive costume. “There is a physical costume,” he told Slash Film. “Swamp Thing himself looks incredible, what Justin Raleigh and the guys over at Fractured are doing with the suit. So it’s going to look amazing and less of the “man in suit” that you’ve seen in the movie and the other TV show.”

Swamp Thing will premiere on the DC Universe series in 2019. Stay tuned to MNN for more updates from around the DCU.
