Disney Reveals First Look at Liu Yifei as Mulan

Mulan
Disney have officially unveiled the first image of Chinese actress Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) as Hua Mulan for the company’s 2020 tentpole that ostensibly serves as a remake of their 1998 animated film. The first look comes just as production on the Chinese-American co-production ramps up.

Mulan features an all-Asian cast made up of Crystal Liu, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Gong Li, and Jet Li. Niki Caro directs a screenplay written by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek. The film will predominantly be shot in China, but some scenes will be filmed in New Zealand, where Caro heralds from.

From the sound of things, Mulan is not actually a live-action remake of the 1998 animated Disney film so much as a completely new take on the legend, with Mulan herself and the Emperor of China being seemingly the only two things that the movies have in common. While fans might lament the absence of fan-favorite characters like Mushu, Li Shang, and Shan Yu, or many of the iconic songs that were written for the animated musical, Disney has delayed the project multiple times in order to get it right.

Mulan will be released on March 27, 2020.
