First Look at ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Shows the Big G Firing his Atomic Breath

Godzilla Atomic Breath 2014
Anyone who saw Godzilla in theaters on opening weekend back in 2014 can tell you that the lead-up to, and subsequent firing of, Godzilla’s atomic breath was one of the highlights of the movie regardless of what you thought of it. So perhaps it’s appropriate, then, that our first official look at the movie is of the Big G using his signature attack once again.

Entertainment Weekly has shared a first look image at the kaiju sequel, showing the titular King of the Monsters triumphantly firing his atomic breath into the sky:

It’s been confirmed by director Michael Dougherty that Godzilla: King of the Monsters will have a presence at Warner Bros. panel at next week’s San Diego Comic Con. Dougherty noted in a brief statement to EW that Godzilla’s presence becoming widely-known in the MonsterVerse setting has sent the entire world into a constant state of paranoia in spite of Godzilla or any other giant monsters being completely absent for the past five years. While King Kong certainly exists, as the prequel Kong: Skull Island will attest to, the circumstances surrounding the island prevent it from being widely-known to the public, whereas Godzilla’s rampage to kill the two MUTO and prevent them from conceiving a race of smaller monsters in San Francisco is about as public as this kind of incident can get.

Joining the Big G this time are two allies and an adversary: Mothra (a gigantic moth creature), Rodan (a gigantic pteranodon), and King Ghidorah (a three-headed dragon), respectively. Dougherty describes the image that was shared as Godzilla using his power less as an attack and more as “a call to arms” – presumably to get the attention of Mothra and Rodan to prepare to fight King Ghidorah as a team of sorts. The director noted that he had a soft spot for Rodan, who he’ll get to introduce alongside the other two new giant monsters.

Of course, in these sorts of movies, there’s always a B-plot involving the humans caught up in the crossfire between the giant monsters. Two of them, Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) and her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) end up being kidnapped by a mysterious organization with their own agenda for these monsters. Russell works for Monarch, which appeared in both Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, and she’ll be joined by returning characters Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins), who are her co-workers. Russell’s ex-husband Mark (Kyle Chandler) will be working with Serizawa and Graham in an effort to save his wife and daughter as the battle between monsters ensues.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released on May 31, 2019. It will be followed by May 22, 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which will have some elements set up in this film.
