‘Maleficent II’ Gets Full Cast and Official Synopsis

Disney is finally developing a sequel to 2014’s surprise smash hit Maleficent, a reimagining of the antagonist from Sleeping Beauty as an anti-heroic character. Maleficent II will be directed by Joachim Rønning, written by Linda Woolverton, Micah Fitzerman-Blue, and Noah Harpster, and produced by Angelina Jolie and Joe Roth.

This latest press release from Disney arrives just as filming on the dark fantasy sequel began earlier today. The official synopsis is as follows:

A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

Returning from the first film are Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, Sam Riley as Diaval, Imelda Staunton as Knotgrass, Lesley Manville as Flittle, Juno Temple as Thistlewit; Harris Dickinson replaces Brendon Thwaites as returning character Prince Phillip. Michelle Pfieffer joins the sequel as Queen Ingrith, with Ed Skrien portraying the central antagonist of the film; Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jenn Murray, David Gyasi, and Robert Lindsay will also be joining the cast in unspecified roles.

Maleficent II does not yet have a release date, although it will most likely be released in 2019. Current windows in that year that are open to untitled live-action Disney movies include October 4 and November 8.
