‘Superman’: First Look at David Corenswet in the Suit Revealed by James Gunn

It’s not a bird, and it’s not a plane. It’s not fan art or AI-generated either. It’s our brand-new Superman! James Gunn took to Instagram on Monday to post the first official image of next year’s Superman reboot, which is currently shooting in Atlanta.

David Corenswet stars as the Man of Steel, though you might be deceived because he looks a lot like Henry Cavill in his own suit in that image. There was the impression that Gunn would be going for a much brighter and color-filled costume in his written-and-directed reboot, but, poor lighting aside, it looks like that may not be the case after all. The design around the neck and how the cape is incorporated is also a bit different.

Cameras have been rolling since the end of February, and are expected to continue a few more weeks. The project, however, will be ready for release next summer even despite the delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year. It is the first entry in the nascent DCU, a brand-new continuity of DC Comics-related properties that will be unfolded under the supervision of DC Studios and its co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

A second season of Peacemaker is also in production at the moment. A Viola Davis-led Waller series was also announced to be produced for Max, but last year’s strikes pushed it back a little. The animated Creature Commandos is also in the works. Other films are being developed in the background too, including Supergirl, which Pam & Tommy director Craig Gillespie is circling, and which is expected to shoot later this year with Millie Alcock leading. Alcock is expected to appear in Superman.

Check out the full suit reveal below. Superman opens in theaters July 11, 2025. David Corenswet stars as the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan stepping in as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult playing Lex Luthor.
