It may have been flying under the radar for most people putting together their 2024 looking-forward-to lists, but Mufasa: The Lion King just had quite a mic drop. The prequel/sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 shot-for-shot remake premiered its first trailer this morning on Good Morning America, and Disney bundled it up with some announcements.

The project, directed by Barry Jenkins, comes out Dec. 20. Here is the official synopsis, which confirms the return of King Simba and Nala, along with their daughter Kiara (voiced by Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter):

“Mufasa: The Lion King” enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
