Margot Robbie Boards Lionsgate’s ‘Monopoly’ Movie As Producer

Margot Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ Barbie.

Margot Robbie has been setting up a rather interesting (and perhaps head-scratching) lineup of movies as a producer. Following the announcement that LuckyChap would be involved in a Sims adaptation and she’d be producing an Avengelyne movie with Olivia Wilde directing, Lionsgate said at CinemaCon that Robbie’s company would be backing their upcoming Monopoly movie with Hasbro.

As TheWrap reported, Lionsgate extended its rights to the board game after acquiring eOne late last year, and could be one of the biggest properties they’ve handled yet. But specifics on that remain unclear. For now, Lionsgate head Adam Fogelson simply said:

“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap. They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join ‘Monopoly’ with a clear point of view. We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”

LuckyChap added the following:

“’Monopoly’ is a top property – pun fully intended. Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”

Obviously, after her success steering Barbie from the very beginning, Margot Robbie has been given a massive benefit of the doubt by Hollywood. But this is certainly an interesting roster she’s lined up recently. Each one by themselves might have been OK, but combined, it seems like she’s getting the scraps that no one will give the time of day to and try to replicate Barbie‘s success. I definitely thought LuckyChap was the next big thing, and they would try to ride the Barbie train to get much edgier stuff than a Monopoly movie. But hey, maybe they can turn this into a criticism of the 2024 housing issues.
